Dolphin spotting in Lovina – Indonesia Travel Diary
Heading to Lovina
After spending three days in Canggu, we headed north to Lovina on the fourth day of our tour. In the morning after breakfast we drove right away. During the drive to Lovina we made several stops for activities.
Our first stop was the Tanah Lot Temple. This is a temple standing on a rock in the middle of the water. We had a tour guide there, who led us around Tanah Lot Beach and told us something from time to time. Unfortunately it was quite cloudy at the time, but when the sun doesn’t shine too strong it’s not so strenuous to walk around and you don’t have to look all the time for shadows.
Visiting the famous rice terraces
After visiting the temple we drove by bus to the Jatiluwih rice terraces. There we were again guided by a tour guide through the field. The rice terraces were very interesting. After visiting it we had lunch there in a restaurant. There we had an all you can eat buffet with Indonesian food for 75 000 rupees, which was really good.
After lunch it started to rain and for the next few hours it did not stop. Actually we had planned to visit a waterfall, but since it went to this steep downhill it would have been too dangerous in the rain. Therefore we drove from the rice terraces directly to our private villa in Lovina. During the drive there we had a great view of the rice terraces despite the rain.
Around 4 pm we then checked into our accommodation. Since the villa belongs to Intro Travel we were the only ones there for the next two nights. In the middle of the forest we had several cottages where we slept in bunk beds. We also had a garden and an infinity pool with a great view of the sea and nature.
The rest of the evening we spent at the pool and finally had dinner there. Here a traditional BBQ was prepared for us. After dinner, I sat by the pool with a few other girls and just chatted a bit.
Hunting Lovinas Dolphins
The next morning we started again early in the morning for our next activity. At seven am we were all already in the bus on the way to the beach. There we first had breakfast in a restaurant before we got into small boats to watch dolphins on the sea.
In fact, we were really lucky that day, as we were able to see a lot of dolphins. These have also jumped out of the water from time to time. Our tour guide told us that a few days before a group had spent an hour and a half on the sea to finally see one dolphin.
After the dolphins were gone we still had the opportunity to swim in the water before we made our way back to the beach.
Balinese Family Visit
From there we drove further into the mountains. There we visited a Balinese family in their home. First we were guided through their garden, where they grew coffee, cocoa and various fruits, which we were also allowed to taste.
After the tour through the garden, the family taught us how to weave baskets of bamboo. They also sold some of them in a shop next to their house. While weaving baskets was quite a challenge for us, it was not a problem for the women there. They were able to weave incredibly fast, which was very interesting to observe.
Afterwards we were served by the family homemade Balinese food, which again tasted very good.
Spending time at the pool
After lunch we drove back to our accommodation. There we then spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool. In the evening we went back to the same restaurant where we had breakfast in the morning. We ate during thunderstorms in the background, at a campfire and live music.
After dinner we drove back to our accommodation. There we quickly packed our things together and then went to bed. Because the next morning we had to check out at 4am to make our way to Gili T.
