Exploring the Pinnacles Desert in Cervantes – Australia Travel Diary
Heading to Cervantes
We spent the days after Kalbarri Nationalpark together in Geraldton. We either went shopping in town or we spent our time at the campground. Our campground was set up very comfortably and was 15 kilometers outside of Geraldton. On December 22nd we went to Cervantes to spend the Christmas days by the sea.
When we arrived at the Caravanpark in Cervantes in the afternoon, we were not pleased at how expensive the campsite was. Due to the holidays, it should also become even more expensive in the coming days. We then decided to book only two nights in Cervantes. For Christmas Eve and Christmas we wanted to look for another campground.
We set up our tents and went to the beach for sunset. The beach was quite nice but we had already seen much nicer beaches on our trip.
After sunset we returned to the campsite and cooked pasta there. Since it was my birthday the next day, we stayed up until midnight. We couldn’t sit outside because the wind made it way too windy. So we got in the car and waited there for my birthday.
Celebrating my Birthday
At midnight we toasted with a bottle of sparkling wine. But then we went to bed very quickly because we wanted to be fit for the next day.
The next morning we got up around 7:30 am. While Mathis set the breakfast table, I was in the bathroom. After a very nice breakfast we then packed the roof tent together to explore the area.
First we drove to the Pinnacles Desert. Through the desert we could drive a 4 km long way by car. Overall, we drove through the Pinnacles Desert twice. We stopped a few times the first time. The second time we just drove through the desert and looked at everything again from the car.
After leaving the Pinnacles Desert, we drove to Sandy Cape Recreation Park. I liked the beach there a lot more than the one in Cervantes. But there was nothing more to see in Sandy Cape Recreation Park than this beach.
Dinner at the sunset
In the meantime it was afternoon, which is why we made our way back towards Cervantes. Before that, however, we stopped in Jurien Bay and went to the beach there again. However, the beach in Jurien Bay is not very different from the beach in Sandy Cape Recreation Park.
Then we drove back to the Caravanpark. In the meantime the campground was extremely full and more like a festival.
At the campground we relaxed a little. Finally, we dressed up a bit nicer then usual because we went out to eat in the evening. Around 6 pm we drove to Jurien Bay, where we found a small beach café, which was right on the sea. This wasn’t a fancy restaurant but the view was very nice and we didn’t really had a lot of choice of restaurants in this area.
We were in the café just in time for sunset and ate there with a view of the setting sun.
After dinner we drove back to Cervantes. Before we ate, we bought a six-pack of beer and a bottle of sparkling wine. We sat down in the car at the back of the campground where there were no other people and ended the evening there with beer and champagne.
Celebrating Christmas
The next morning we packed our things together and drove around 10 am. Christmas Eve at this campsite with all the people and noise would never have been a relaxed evening.
We had decided the day before that we were going back to the Caravanpark in Geraldton to celebrate Christmas Eve there. We were very tired because the last two evenings we were in bed after midnight and could never really sleep long.
When we finally arrived in Geraldton around noon, we first went shopping. There we treated ourselves to a bit of food for the evening, which we would not normally buy. We had seafood, bread, olives, assorted dips, cheese, ham, crackers, pasta salad and chips.
Around 6 pm we started setting the table with flowers and candles. We both also had a little gift for each other. But since we were so exhausted from the day before, we went to bed at around 9 pm. Nevertheless, we made the best of Christmas Eve without our own family.
After our days in Geraldton we went further south to Margaret River. If you would like to know what we experienced during our time in Margaret River. Please read my next blog post A long way to Margaret River – Australia Travel Diary.
