Hot days and crocodiles at the Mataranka Hot Springs – Australia Travel Diary

The Editfalls

The next morning we were all awake at around 7 am. After the shower we started to pack up our car and left Litchfield Nationalpark. Around 9 am we were finished and then made our way towards Mataranka Hot Springs.

That day we had a longer drive of more than three hours ahead of us. In the meantime we stopped in small villages for electricity, water and petrol.

Around one pm we made our first stop at the Editfalls to swim there. The small waterfall, which was only a few meters from the parking lot, was quite nice but very large for swimming.

Swimming at the waterfall

1.5 kilometers away on a mountain was a slightly smaller waterfall. Since it was quite early noon at that time, it was extremely hot. Hiking 1.5 kilometers up a hill in these temperatures is very difficult. So we thought for a while if the pool is really worth seeing. After we finally googled the pictures, we decided to walk the path after all.

In fact, it was incredibly exhausting for me and after we arrived at the upper pool after half an hour, we jumped straight into the water. There wasn’t that much going on there either and we first cooled off in the water for a while.

At around 3 pm we walked back to the parking lot. This time we chose the shorter and easier way, where we arrived directly at the car. We should have chosen this way from the start.

Camping at the Mataranka Hotsprings

From there we drove straight on in the direction of Kathrine. When we got there in the afternoon we went to the supermarket and finally bought fresh groceries again. From the supermarket it was another hour’s drive to the Mataranka Hotsprings.

When we arrived at the campsite it was already dark. The campsite was a bit bigger than the campsites we had booked in the days before. In addition, there were significantly more people there. However, after a few days we had a socket available again so that we could finally charge all our cell phones, cameras and power banks again.

We then set up the tents in the dark and then started to cook the food. That evening we just sat at the table and talked to each other before we went to bed.

A day at the Mataranka Hot Springs

The next morning we were all woken up at 6 am by an extremely annoying crow. Since it was getting light anyway, we got up and went straight to the Mataranka Hotsprings. At that time there were hardly any people there. In fact, the water was quite warm there, but still very pleasant.

Two tourists approached us there and pointed out that two crocodiles were lying in the water not far from us. Since we’ve all wanted to see a crocodile since Darwin anyway, we let the two tourists show us the spot directly.

In fact, there was a small crocodile lying in the water, which you couldn’t see so well, and a slightly larger crocodile, which was lying by the water.

Mataranka Hot Springs

Afterwards we went back to the campsite and took a shower there, played cards and had breakfast. Around 10 am it slowly got unbearably hot again so we had no choice but to go back to the Mataranka Hotsprings to cool off there.

We spent most of the rest of the day at the Mataranka Hotsprings. From time to time we were at the car, but on the campsite it was unbearable in the heat until half past four.

When it slowly became bearable again, we took a shower and then tried out the drone for the first time, which I had bought in Sydney before the trip.

The evening then went quite similar to the evenings before. We cooked pasta again and then sat together for a bit. Since we were pretty tired, we went to bed pretty quickly.
