My first month as an Au Pair
My first month as an Au Pair went by so incredibly fast, I can’t believe how long I’ve been here. It’s a little weird to say now that I’m only here for five months instead of six. I am so happy with my host family and the environment in which I live. I cannot imagine that I will have to return to Germany one day.
The children have become fully accustomed to me. My host mother also told me this week that they ask for me on weekends when I am in the city with my friends. That made me very happy, because it also shows me that they like me.
In the meantime the bus and train ride has also become very familiar for me. I don’t use Google Maps as often as in the first week anymore. Without my phone I would have been completely lost in the first days.
The daily routine with the children has also become a routine for me. And it is really incredible how fast such a day as an Au Pair passes even if it is really exhausting.
I haven’t been homesick until now but when I come home after a long day I sometimes wish I was lying in my own bed in germany or being with my own family.
I have also met a lot of other au pairs. With a few of them I get along so well with that we meet more often, but with some of them you notice right after the first meeting that you don’t really have the same interests.
I also wrote myself a list of all the things I want to do here in Sydney and have already been able to tick off a lot in my first month. I’ve already seen Hyde Park, been to Taronga Zoo, made the Manly to Spit and the Bondi to Coogee Walk. I was also at the Chinese Garden of Friendship, crossed the Harbour Bridge and was at the Opera House.
But there are a lot of other things on my list as well. I definitely want to go up to the Blue Mountains, the Sydney Eye Tower, Luna Park and Wild Life Zoo. And of course like everyone who comes to Australia I want to hold a Koala.
