Stranded without a job in Broome – Australia Travel Diary

1000 Kilometers in one day

After spending two nights in Kununurra, we left at seven in the morning towards Broome. The distance between Kununurra and Broome was 1000 kilometers long. However, since there was nothing to see on the way, we had no choice but to drive through the 1000 kilometers in one go.

Without long breaks and with many true crime podcasts we arrived in Broome 14 hours later. There we noticed straight away that it was cooler by the sea than in the outback.

We then had to look for a campsite. After two failures we found one, but it was a bit more expensive. But after listening to almost 10 hours of true crime podcasts, which made us a bit nervous, we didn’t want to sleep on a remote free campsite that evening.

We then set up the tents directly at the campsite. But before we went to sleep we played cards and went to bed after midnight.

Spending the day at the Beach

The next morning we more or less slept in before we packed our things back together. We didn’t really had a plan, we just knew that we didn’t want to pay $70 for a campsite again the next night.

First we went shopping to Coles. From there we decided to go to the beach to have breakfast. We then spent the whole afternoon on the beach. We extended the marquise from our car and then sat on our camping chairs in front of our car.

The temperatures here in Broome are a lot more bearable than in the outback. You can easily endure it in the sun at lunchtime.

We hadn’t found a good free campsite by then. So we drove to another campsite in Broome, which we also had to pay for.

In a rush to find a job

The next few days were a bit boring. Our money was getting scarce, which is why we wanted to find a job as quickly as possible. We had planned from the start that we would have to work during our trip. However, we all definitely wanted a job that would qualify us for the second year visa, so a farm would be the best solution for us.

While we mostly spent the evenings on the beach at the Entrance Point and watched the sunset, we spent the days shopping and getting stuff done. Among other things, we had to change the car to Marcel’s name. This were done very quickly compared to Germany.

After being in Broome for a few days, experiencing everything and getting bored, we slowly started looking after a farm job near Broome.

At first we thought it was pretty easy to find a job anywhere in Australia. But we quickly realized that farm jobs are not so easy to come by in Western Australia, especially in Broome.

No Job, new plans

After much deliberation, we finally decided to change our plans. We then decided not to limit our search for jobs to the Broome area but to expand to the whole of Western Australia. There were many more farms, especially in the Perth area.

Going to a farm in Perth would then mean that we would drive over 2000 kilometers in a few days and then drive up the coast back to Broome at the end of our farm time. Not the smartest idea, but at that point we had no choice but to change our whole plan.

After almost a week in Broome we still didn’t get any further with our job search, so we decided to travel even further down the coast to Eighty Mile Beach.
